Can I trade the news?

The rules differ between evaluation and funded phases, and between programs.

During evaluation: no timing restrictions

During all evaluation phases, across every Orion program, there are no timing restrictions on trading around high-impact news. You can open, close, and modify trades freely around scheduled events while you're in the evaluation.

⚠️
News trading as a strategy is never allowed
The timing freedom above is about individual trades. Using news trading as a strategy is prohibited across all programs and phases, including the evaluation. That means no directional bets based on anticipated news, no option-style structures around events, and no systematically firing trades just before or after releases to ride the volatility.

On Orion Trader Accounts: rules vary by program

What "high-impact event" means

Any major economic, financial, or geopolitical announcement that may significantly move the market, including events marked high-impact on forexfactory.com's economic calendar and in the Economic Calendar section of your Orion Dashboard. Think NFP, FOMC decisions, CPI, central-bank rate announcements, and similar.

What's allowed during a restricted window

  • Keeping existing trades open: positions opened before the window can stay open (though any modifications you make during the window may be reviewed)
ℹ️
Check your trading policies in the dashboard
Your Client Section shows the policies that apply to your specific program, including any news-related restrictions. Check there before trading around scheduled events on an Orion Trader Account. Breaches during a restricted window may have the related profit adjusted, deducted, or voided, and repeated breaches can deactivate the funded account.
